Research Interests

The main area of research that I am involved in at the Allan Wilson Centre is the direct measurement of mutation rates in Adelie penguin (Pygoscelis adelia) mitochondrial DNA sequences using a pedigree-based approach.

The AWC laboratory at Albany headed by Professor Dave Lambert has pioneered the use of Adelie penguins as a model system for studying the relationship between evolutionary rates and mutation rates in the same organism. This project involves the analysis of HVR1 sequences from over 600 Adelie penguin pedigrees and complements a previous study measuring evolutionary rates for Adelie penguin HVR1 using ancient DNA material.

I am also involved with the development of real-time PCR techniques for assessing the quality of ancient DNA, and for measuring the efficiency of primers used in ancient DNA studies.
